Tornadoes usually start over land but hurricanes start over warm oceans. The duration is different between hurricanes and tornadoes because hurricanes duration is 1 week average whereas tornadoes duration is about 20 minutes or less. Another big difference is the width of storms. Hurricanes have an average width of 300 miles whereas tornadoes have an average of 1.5km.
